Game Rules vs. Fun
While there are all kinds of game system rules, often group fun can be more important. Defer to your DM or GM to determine when system rules can be overridden but don’t count on the rules always being overridden every time you want to do the same thing. Rule overriding should be consider one-offs.
Player Expectations
- Try to respect the other people (Players, DM/GM)
- Try not to speak over other players (plus if everyone speaks at once, things generally can’t be resolved very easily)
- Try to enable Group Fun. This is a collaborative creative process and the whole group having fun should be the highest priority.
- Try to role-play. Play your character as your character. The min-max’ed most efficient course of action usually isn’t the action that your character would likely take.
- Try to be careful of Player Knowledge vs. Character Knowledge.
- Try to minimize Table Talk. In the introductory period there will be a moderate amount of table talk but beyond that period, you should minimize table talk. If you want to communicate things, your characters should probably directly just speak to other characters — in character.
- Don’t use your character’s personality flaw to be a not-entertaining not-fun jerk to other players and their characters.
- Try to enjoy the journey and the social aspect. You are NOT playing a video game so you can’t treat it as one. Your interactions are the most important aspect of your play.
- Try to flesh out your character’s back story and privately communicate it to the DM
Character Expectations
- In the end, characters make their OWN decisions.
- Think about what you want to do and be ready to do it when the opportunity arises (ie: think about what to do before your turn)
- Try to understand your skills, abilities, and spells (ask your DM questions when appropriate if you’re unsure)
- Prepared spell casters, please try to pick your spells before the adventuring day. If you take a “long rest” you can always make changes to them later but it will save a lot of time on “game day”
- Consider using Spell Cards for Magic using characters
- Keep track of your HP, temp HP, Spell Slots used, limited ability use, etc.
- Get a part time job. If you don’t think of a way to offset your costs of living, you’ll need to live in wretched conditions or you will starve between adventures.
- Split up the loot reasonably evenly (for now, the DM will split up loot that doesn’t go to a specific person or just place it in the team’s group storage. Generally speaking, if a group of people find things worth money, they’ll generally get split between those people even if only 1 character picks it up)
- Don’t be Evil. You don’t have to be Good but being Evil alignment will be at odds with team building (and the overarching events, the expedition’s recruiting process, and team fun) (if you want to be Lawful Good, discuss it with your DM first)
- Don’t fight with your teammates; It may invoke the Wrath of deities or cause misfortune. Don’t kill your teammates over disagreements.
- Talk with your teammates; Most of them can’t read your mind (at least not without spending a valuable spell slot).
- Know that your actions have permanent consequences.
- Know that there are always more powerful people and things in the world than you.
Personal Information Privacy
- Please be very careful about information in public or semi-public places such as Social Media.
- Do not post photos from sessions or Rabbit Hole related events with people in them without explicit consent from those people.
- Do not post private or confidential information about people not limited to identifying information about players, what characters belong to what players, etc. (including obvious things like people’s names, phone numbers, home stations, locations, etc.)
- For the most part, keep photos in the team chat. If you want to post a photo of your mini on the battlefield, you can but be sure to not include anything the would violate the spirit of this privacy policy.
If you have any suggestions, questions, comments, or concerns about these Rules and Expectations, please talk to your DM/GM.
